The young people of the Vulcan Centre, a space located in the Boulevard area of Hull which has grown over the years from a boxing club providing positive activities for children and young people to participate in, to a youth led community hub also offering education, employment and wellbeing services, are stepping into the spotlight for a different kind of artistry.

A new photography exhibition featuring powerful portraits taken by young people at Vulcan launches on Thursday 13th November, with the public invited to view the work from Saturday 15th November at Western Library.
The exhibition offers a striking and thought-provoking look at how young people see each other, away from the pressures of social media. Guided by Mal Williamson, Vulcan’s media worker and creative lead on the project, the young photographers have captured raw, honest images that reflect identity, friendship, and self-expression in a refreshing light.
There will also be a photographer’s workshop on this day, with Mal encouraging other youngsters to make photographs, in the Western’s community garden.
“This is about more than photography—it’s about seeing and being seen, on our own terms,” said Mal. “In an age of filters and online personas, these portraits are real, and that’s powerful.”
The exhibition launch will include opportunities to meet some of the young artists and hear more about their creative process. Mal will also be present at the Western Library Open Day, engaging with visitors and offering insight into the wider creative work happening at Vulcan.
Don’t miss this moving and meaningful exhibition that reminds us all of the power of image-making and the untapped potential of Hull’s young creatives.
