University student, Melanie Healy, has received a £3,600 funding boost from one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies to help ease some of the financial burdens of student life.

The 18-year-old from Beverley, who began studying Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge in October 2025, is one of three recipients of the Oddfellows’ First Degree Course Educational Award – a non-repayable bursary. She was chosen on merit from applicants within the Society’s national membership.
A former Hymers College student, Melanie will receive £900 for each of the four years of the course. She says she is hoping to put it towards travelling to French and Arabic-speaking countries for internships and exchanges to improve her language skills.
A member of Humber Wolds Oddfellows, Melanie said: “I was delighted when I found out that I’d been chosen to receive the funding.
“I would like to thank the Oddfellows for the grant, and would like them to know that they have helped me to ensure that I can fund overseas activities to improve my language skills, which will ensure that I can get the most out of my course, and ultimately get the best possible grade at the end of my degree.”
Although unsure what her career plans are at this stage, Melanie says: “I would definitely like to work in a role that allows me to use my language skills, so probably a role in international business or the civil service”.
Branch Secretary of Humber Wolds Oddfellows, Neil Smith, said: “We’re delighted for Melanie, and glad that the Oddfellows is able to help her out in what is an exciting chapter in her life. Budgeting alongside studies can be tough, so this award should help to ease that burden a little.
“We’re already very proud of Melanie’s achievements and we wish her every success at university and beyond.”
Humber Wolds Oddfellows is a not-for-profit friendly society and supports around 330 members in the local area through regular social gatherings and care and welfare benefits, as well as opportunities to take part in volunteering and fundraising initiatives.
The Oddfellows’ First Degree Course Educational Award aims to support students from its membership who are heading to university for the first time.
