Actors and legal experts put harassment in spotlight at Hull theatre

Actors will share the stage with legal experts to put workplace harassment in the spotlight during this year’s Humber Business Week.

On Wednesday 3rd June, Recognising Harassment will see Hull Truck Theatre and Wilkin Chapman Rollits deliver a session in which professional actors perform a series of realistic workplace scenarios exploring how unwanted conduct can amount to harassment.

Important legal insight will be provided by the firm’s employment law specialists to give context and deepen understanding, including how to identify psychological abuse, cyberbullying and microaggressions at work.

A recent survey of UK employees found that 28% had experienced bullying or harassment at work in the past year, while nearly 60% of those affected chose not to report it.*

The Recognising Harassment event is particularly timely in light of new protections against harassment, introduced by the Employment Rights Act 2025. From April 2026, disclosures about sexual harassment have been covered by whistleblowing protections, and further changes are due to come into force from October 2026.

Ed Heppel, partner and employment law specialist at Wilkin Chapman Rollits, said: “Harassment is not always obvious, and organisations don’t always recognise it until problems have already developed.

“This event will provide a space for employers to see real‑world situations brought to life, understand the law, and leave more confident about how to safeguard their people and avoid legal risk.”

Wilkin Chapman Rollits previously worked with Hull Truck Theatre on an unconscious bias-themed event during last year’s Humber Business Week.

Organisers say this year’s session is particularly relevant for anyone with responsibility for people management or workplace culture.

It is aimed at employers, managers and HR professionals from across the Humber region, and will help businesses recognise workplace harassment in its different forms, understand how it can affect individuals and teams, and know how to respond early to protect people while reduce legal and reputational risk.

Tom Saunders, associate director at Hull Truck Theatre, said: “This interactive session will be a chance to dive into key issues, but through analysing the actions of highly skilled actors. We hope to be able to give this important topic a fresh perspective!

“Recent changes to UK law have strengthened protections against bullying and harassment at work, placing more responsibility on employers and widening what’s considered unacceptable behaviour.

“We look forward to working with Wilkin Chapman Rollits once again as part of Humber Business Week 2026 to deliver this insightful session.”

Recognising Harassment takes place from 2:30pm to 4:30pm on Wednesday 3rd June, and is one of three events being presented by Wilkin Chapman Rollits during Humber Business Week.

Earlier the same day, from 1pm-2.30pm, the firm is partnering with Forrester Boyd and Metro Bank to co‑host Netwalking, a relaxed outdoor business networking event at Humber Bridge Country Park.

And on Thursday 4th June, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, the firm will host Charities’ Question Time Live at the Aura Innovation Centre in Hessle, bringing together charity CEOs and trustees for a Question Time-style discussion on the realities of leading and governing charities.

Pat Coyle, chair of Humber Business Week and marketing and business development consultant at Wilkin Chapman Rollits, said: “Humber Business Week is all about bringing the region’s business community together to share ideas, tackle real-world challenges and leave with something useful you can put into practice the next day.

“Working with Hull Truck Theatre allows us to bring important workplace issues to life in a way that’s engaging, memorable and grounded in reality.”
