Official trailer and crowdfunder launched for independent documentary on breaking through in the UK music industry

Acclaimed author and musician Alex Boucher MBE and the northern creative house Pink + Red release the first official trailer for Three and a Half Minutes of Fame, an independent music documentary based on Boucher’s 2024 memoir of the same name.

Frame from Three and a Half Minutes of Fame – Shot by Luke Hallett – Chiedu Oraka at The New Adelphi Club, Hull

Released alongside a crowdfunding campaign to complete the film, the trailer explores what it takes for grassroots artists to break through in the UK music industry, comparing the 1990s with today, and features interviews with industry-respected contributors such as Miki Berenyi (Lush), Steve Tannett (Marshall Records), Lesley Bleakley (Beggars Group), Sam Duckworth (Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, and Music Venues Trust) and Sophie Asquith (Music Venue Trust), Lily Hopkins (The Meffs) and more.

Drawing on Boucher’s memoir, which chronicles his seven-year pursuit of fame, from signing a record deal at the age of 17 to performing across the UK and encountering leading 1990s acts including The Fall, Suede, Blur and Mansun, the documentary presents conversations with musicians past and present, reflecting on their experiences of attempting to establish themselves in the music industry.

Filmed at grassroots venues and music studios across London, Hull, and Essex, including The 100 Club and Strongroom Bar in London, Black Cactus Studios in Essex, and The Adelphi and Queens Hotel in Hull, the documentary asks how much has changed for artists trying to break through between the 1990s and today.

With a substantial body of footage already filmed, the project now enters its next phase. Funds raised through the crowdfunding campaign will allow the production team to bring the full-length documentary to completion and to present it to audiences, with aims for a UK grassroots venue tour. Speaking about the Three and a Half Minutes of Fame documentary, Presenter and Co-Producer Alex Boucher MBE, said: “The documentary raises an important question about how much support artists and venues receive, and how much has changed for them since the 90s. We hope to amplify those challenges and make the conversation louder with Three and a Half Minutes of Fame.

“Music and Arts is such a long-standing and important part of the UK’s DNA, so I think It’s important to understand the impact that music and culture had on us during the 90s and to reflect on that special time to make sure venues keep thriving and to support new talent. Pink + Red have the same ethos, and bring a new dynamic that I would have struggled to replicate; they’ve also benefited from having an established grassroots venue and music community in Hull that’s helped bring a fresh perspective to the doc.”

Speaking about the Three and a Half Minutes of Fame documentary, Director and Co-Producer Jenni Harrison, said: “The roots of this story started with Alex’s memoir and his experience living through the 90s music scene, but what came out during filming really subverted our expectations of how people view that era compared to now. The narrative of this film has been shaped entirely by the people featured in it, from then and now, and we know there’s a real appetite to hear these stories in the current climate.”
