An award-winning play produced by a Hull theatre company for the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 programme has begun a month-long run at a major London theatre this week.
Middle Child’s All We Ever Wanted Was Everything , written by Luke Barnes with music by James Frewer, opened for previews at the Bush Theatre on Wednesday after stunning audiences and critics alike in Hull and Edinburgh last year.

The epic piece of gig theatre follows the lives of two Hull families over 30 years, against the backdrop of an asteroid heading for Earth.

All We Ever Wanted Was Everything premiered at the Welly Club in Hull in June 2017, as part of the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 programme.  It then travelled to the Edinburgh Fringe, where it sold out and won three awards, including an Excellence Award from The Stage for actor and Middle Child company member, Marc Graham.  The show returned this summer with another week at Edinburgh Fringe as well as two sold-out dates at Hull’s Freedom Festival.

It has been described by the The Stage critic Fergus Morgan as “simply the best show ever made”.  Middle Child artistic director, Paul Smith, said: “We are fiercely proud to be based in Hull and couldn’t exist anywhere else, so it’s really exciting for us to be telling a story so rooted in the city on a national stage.  The Bush is an incredible theatre making great work and we’re buzzing to be taking it over with Hull accents, chip spice and banging tunes.”

Katy Fuller, Absolutely Cultured creative director and CEO, said: “ All We Ever Wanted Was Everythingwas originally commissioned by Hull 2017.  The response to the show both locally and at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, by critics and audiences alike, clearly demonstrates the exceptional work produced by this talented Hull theatre company.  Absolutely Cultured is proud to continue to support Middle Child and we’re extremely excited to see work that is made in Hull begin a month-long stint on the stage of an internationally acclaimed London theatre.”

The Bush Theatre has produced hundreds of ground-breaking premieres since its inception in 1972, many of them Bush Theatre commissions, and hosted guest productions by leading companies and artists from across the world.  The Bush Theatre is widely acclaimed as the seedbed for the best new playwrights, many of whom have gone on to become established names.  The Bush Theatre has won over 100 awards, and developed an enviable reputation for touring its acclaimed productions nationally and internationally.

All We Ever Wanted Was Everything runs at the Bush Theatre in London from 31 October-24 November 2018 and is supported by the Backstage Trust.
