Archbishop Sentamu Academy students win National Sports Award

Mia Clarke, Kacey-Lee Bulman, Elsie Denton, Jamie-Leigh Neale-Wright and Morgan Bulman, all are students at Sentamu Academy in east Hull.

Five students from East Hull’s Archbishop Sentamu Academy have been crowned the winners of the Youth Sports Trust’s “Outstanding Achievement” award 2019. Mia Clarke, Kacey-Lee Bulman, Elsie Denton, Jamie-Leigh Neale-Wright and Morgan Bulman were recognised for their dedication to sport and community in the local area.

The Youth Sport Trust awards evening boasted representatives from Sport England and Team GB’s Olympic and Paralympic teams in an unforgettable night for the academy.

Over the past year, the girls have given up their own time to improve sporting opportunities for others in the surrounding community. Their inspirational work includes coaching their beloved sport of rugby at local primary schools, and supporting elderly groups at the Freedom Centre with exercise and movement classes. They also help to referee at primary school tournaments organised and hosted at Archbishop Sentamu Academy.

They are also a part of the academy’s Rugby Scholarship Programme which works with around 200 students at the school. The programme is open to both boys and girls at the academy and runs a specialised athletic programme to develop their ability on and off the field both as athletes and learners. The girls’ school team were recently crowned Hull Schools’ Rugby Champions.

Kacey-Lee (15) said “I’m just happy to have the opportunity to be part of all these projects. We never did any of this for recognition, it’s just really fun and great to know that you’re helping others. I want others to be able to enjoy sports like we do. We all believe that everyone should have the opportunity to do sports regardless of their age or ability.”

Academy Principal, Chay Bell, said “This is a great moment for everyone involved. The girls have dedicated a lot of time and effort to their local community and made a really positive impact. We’re all incredibly proud of them. This is a testament to the work of our Rugby Scholarship Programme.”

Ashley Hosier, Youth Sports Trust Development Manager, tweeted “What a fantastic day! Feeling truly inspired after hearing how passionate schools are on improving young people’s wellbeing & life chances through the power of sport, play & physical activity! The transformation of education continues.”
