Big Red Stoptober Ball rolls around Humber and North Yorkshire

Smoking remains the single leading cause of preventable ill health and death across Humber and North Yorkshire, with smoking rates still higher than the national average. This Stoptober, with more help, support and options available than ever before, it’s a great time to give quitting another go.

Stoptober – now in its 14th year – aims to empower people to give up smoking during October, as evidence shows people are 5 times more likely to quit for good if they can make it to at least 28 days smoke free.

Some people may remember the ‘big red ball’ from the Stoptober TV adverts which showed people pushing the 8ft ball together – and that is the key message of Stoptober, that people who smoke will find it much easier to give up if others are doing it at the same time.

The ‘Yes to Quit’ team got their hands on one of the 8ft inflatable balls and have been busy visiting locations across the Humber and North Yorkshire area.

Scott Crosby, Associate Director of The Humber and North Yorkshire Centre for Excellence in Tobacco Control said:

“It’s a great time for people to give quitting another go. With the Tobacco and Vapes Bill on the horizon—protecting future generations from ever starting smoking—it’s time to ensure that everyone who’s been trapped by addiction finds the right support and tools to quit for good.No one picks up their first cigarette thinking they’ll still be smoking years later. But the good news is: free expert help is available, everywhere, for everyone.

“Stopping forever can sound overwhelming, but stopping for a month can feel more manageable for people, which is why Stoptober is a great campaign.”
