Driffield business announces support for local athlete

A Driffield business is supporting a local athlete as he attempts to beat three Guinness World Records this year.

Middleton on the Wolds based Soanes Poultry is providing chicken to fuel the training schedule of Angus Leckonby from Octon as he competes in a series of running, swimming and triathlon events this year.

23-year-old Mr Leckonby, who already holds Guinness World Records as the youngest male with an intellectual disability to complete a marathon; the fastest time for a male (II1) marathon and the youngest person to swim two miles in open water (II1),is grateful to Soanes for their support, which includes monthly deliveries of chicken: “I’m proud to represent Soanes Poultry as an athlete ambassador and I’m excited about my Guinness World Record attempts at the London Marathon, where I hope to beat my own record, the Outlaw Half Triathlon and the Super Six Mile Serpentine Swim in Hyde Park.”

Soanes Poultry’s brand ambassador, Robert Laird, proposed the sponsorship support package. He said: “We were impressed with Angus’s professionalism, can-do attitude and training ethic, all of which have contributed to his success to date. There’s a great fit between Angus’s values and ours, and we are looking forward to seeing him progress as he completes his 2026 competition schedule.”

In addition to the world record events, Mr Leckonby’s competition schedule includes the Salford Masters regional open water swimming championships, the T100 London Triathlon and the Special Olympics National Games. He is preparing for the competitions with a rigorous training schedule, which typically includes 20 hours a week of swimming, cycling and running, plus monthly sessions with his triathlete coach, Fran Recchia from Total Tri Training. He also trains with Scarborough Swimming Club, Yorkshire Wolds Runners and Wolds Triathlon Club. He is supported by his father, former national swimmer and now coach, Matthew Leckonby.

Soanes Poultry is a family-owned business that has been rearing and preparing chicken since 1947. It employs over 180 people and sells its chicken to butchers and independent retailers in Yorkshire and to wholesalers and catering butchers nationwide.
