Driffield Silver Band celebrate their winning return to contesting

Award winning brass band celebrates multiple victories ahead of their upcoming Beverley concert.

It was an early start and a day to remember for Driffield Silver Band, who travelled to Chorley, near Manchester, to compete in the Red Admiral Brass Band Contest on Sunday 27th September – and returned home crowned 4th section champions, alongside a string of special awards. The result marks a remarkable comeback for the band, as this was their first contest appearance since 1988 – making their clean sweep of trophies all the more impressive!

The band dazzled both judges and audience alike, taking home the 4th section winners trophy, as well as awards for the best percussion section, best bass section, best euphonium and baritone section and the best horn and flugel section.

Musical director, Peter Kench, said that the achievement was the result of months of hardwork and dedication: “This result is absolutely fantastic! To return to the contest stage after more than 35 years and come away with four awards is beyond what we could have hoped for. Every single one of the players have worked incredibly hard and have truly delivered a performance to be proud of.”

Many of the players had never contested with a brass band prior to this contest and this will certainly not be a contest to forget for any of the players.

With their triumphant return now complete, the award-winning Driffield Silver Band are turning their attention to their next major event, a brass band’s take on the literary classic ‘The Great Gatsby’. This is promised to be a glamorous, 1920s inspired concert featuring a selection of tunes which helped them win last weekend alongside arrangements of songs such as ‘Bat Out of Hell’ and ‘It’s All Coming Back To Me’ at Beverley Parkway Cinema on Saturday 18th October at 7pm. To avoid missing out, please order tickets in advance by using the Beverley Parkway Cinema website.

This upcoming show promises an unforgettable evening of jazz-age sparkle, cinematic music and local talent, performed by East Yorkshire’s newly crowned champions.
