In the face of adversity in the hospitality industry, Social are bucking the trend and delivering a diverse programme of entertainment, with safety at the top of the list.
The next raft of entertainment programmed between October and December includes film, comedy, and live music with Acoustic Sundays.
Social, the multi-arts venue on Humber Street, has operated primarily as an arts cafe bar from Friday to Sunday but since widening the entertainment programme to include Acoustic Sunday, comedy and film, the venue boasts three sold-out cinema shows.
This weekend saw the return of cinema at the venue, with a sell-out screening of Liam Gallagher: As It Was, the first in a series of music films and album playback events presented by Social, collectively called Play it Loud!. The next music film is a sold-out screening of live concert Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense in November, followed by the Amy Winehouse documentary, Amy, in December.
Social’s other new film night, Crowd Pleasers, brings romance, world cinema and Hollywood classic cinema to the venue. This month sees a screening of La La Land on October 18, followed by the quirky coming-of-age comedy/drama, Lady Bird in November, and a sold out screening of the all-time Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life in December.
Play It Loud! music films and Crowd Pleasers are each held once a month on a Sunday evening. The cinema audience are seated at socially distanced tables of 2, 3 and 4 in the large auditorium and table service is available for drinks and snacks throughout the performance.
The Social team are excited to present their first comedy night at the venue with Carl Hutchinson on Wednesday 14 October 2020, as part of his UK 2020 Tour. The Geordie comic, winner of The Magners Pub Comedian of the Year and Beat the Frog World Series Competition, has been billed as “Effortlessly hilarious. He captivates the audience with his perfectly timed suspenseful silences and plain-talking sense-making.” Tickets are now limited and are on sale via seetickets.com
Next year will see the venue bring back the bands. Social have teamed up with Under the Influence and will play host to some class acts in 2021, including The Blinders, The Lathums, BC Camplight, Mystery Jets and Ben Watt. Tickets are now on sale via seetickets.com
In response to the widening artistic programme, Social have expanded the already extensive drinks offer to include a selection of cocktails and a new range of Atom Beers. Food is now on the menu every Sunday with fish and chips and the “Hull Butty”, courtesy of Humber Fish Co. Restaurant.
Dave Mays, Director of Sesh Events UK, the team behind Social commented: “The appetite for going out and being entertained has not waned in these exceptional times, in fact, people are hungry for it. We hope to offer a semblance of normality in the current climate, in a safe environment. We are delighted by the recent sell-outs and the positive sales for next year’s live music events and we will continue to champion culture in the city so long as it is safe to do so.”
Justine Peacock, Co- Director said “We have gone to great lengths to ensure public safety, with reduced capacity, social distancing and table service, amongst the many other sanitary measures in place. Our operation has been checked by Hull City Council and we want to assure customers that the environment at Social is as safe as we can make it. We look forward to entertaining our customers with some fantastic events”
Social opening times are Fridays 5pm – 10 pm, Saturday 2 pm -10 pm and Acoustic Sunday 12 pm – 6 pm with Cinema events 7 pm – 10pm. The venue will open for events only from Monday to Thursday. Children are allowed in the venue until 7pm, accompanied by an adult.
