HEY Confident Futures is proudly celebrating five years of nurturing a new kind of leadership network in the region. One that is rooted in connection, collaboration, with a belief that generous leadership transforms communities.

Since its launch in 2021, HEY Confident Futures has grown into a thriving network of over 560 leaders from across Hull and East Yorkshire’s VCSE (Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise) and cultural sector. United by shared values and a commitment to building a strong, connected region, the network came together last month to celebrate its milestone fifth anniversary at Hull Truck Theatre.
It was an afternoon full of stories, laughter, and heartfelt reflection.
At its core, HEY Confident Futures is designed to encourage and develop connected, collaborative, and generous leadership. It is a free, inclusive network for leaders of all kinds across Hull and East Yorkshire. Members can access a wide range of leadership development opportunities, including free events, coaching, mentoring, resources, and space to connect with other VCSE leaders in the region. The programme is flexible by design, allowing leaders to engage in ways that work best for them, whether through skill-building workshops, community projects, or personal growth opportunities.
Among its many initiatives, the network supports programmes such as New to Leadership, which is now welcoming its fifth cohort, the Leadership Advocacy Network, Leaders Who Care, and the Senior Leaders Community. All create spaces for real conversations, shared learning, and leadership that feels authentic and human.
The recent anniversary celebration brought together voices from across the network. Paula Bielby, HEYCF’s Programme Manager, captured the spirit of the day perfectly:
“The day was about celebrating how far we’ve come together to create a shared vision of a connected, collaborative, nurturing network of generous leaders, not in a performative way, but through deep, authentic connection built on trust, values, passion and purpose.”
Stories shared on the day were powerful examples of leadership in action. Dianne Hamilton from Goodwin Development Trust spoke about how co-leadership has transformed the way she leads by creating space for shared responsibility and freedom. Jenna Little from Cornerhouse highlighted the importance of youth voices in leadership as she spoke about their upcoming Youth Summit.
We also heard from Severine Kipili of Bora Shabaa, who perfectly captured the essence of the network when she said, “Together, we’re not just imagining a better Hull. We’re building it.”
Natalie Spiking from Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire touched hearts with the story of Bee Lady Day, a moving project that honours Jean Bishop, reminding everyone of the profound impact kindness and legacy can have.
Alison Stannard, CEO at Sight Support Hull & East Yorkshire, closed the afternoon with a deeply personal reflection on how the Senior Leaders Community has provided her with a vital sense of safety and solidarity.
The celebration wasn’t just about looking back; it was also a moment to reflect on how HEY Confident Futures continues to shape the future of leadership in the region. David Gent, CEO of Active Humber, shared how the network has supported both him and his team, saying:
“As a long-time member of HEY Confident Futures, I’ve seen how this network supports not just me, but our whole team at Active Humber. Several colleagues have taken part in the training and coaching, and it’s become part of how we grow and support each other as leaders.
“What makes HEYCF truly special is the authentic community it’s built. It brings people together from across the VCSE sector, no matter their role. Everyone shows up with openness and honesty, and from that come powerful ideas and real actions that make a difference not just in their organisations, but across the region.
“The celebration event showed how this network lives its values: connected, collaborative, generous leadership with no hierarchy, just people doing great work and supporting each other. I was inspired by the big strategic impact and the unexpected partnerships, like the RSPCA teaming up with Hull Minster. That’s the power of HEYCF, it creates space where meaningful connections thrive.”
True to HEY Confident Futures’ spirit, the event ended on a joyful note with a fun quiz full of laughter and friendly competition.
HEY Confident Futures would not be possible without the ongoing support of its funders. The National Lottery has supported the network since 2020, helping it grow and thrive, and The Rank Foundation’s early belief helped bring the vision to life. The network is run and managed by Two Ridings Community Foundation.
Looking ahead to the next five years, HEY Confident Futures remains full of optimism and energy. Whether you’re a first-time team leader or a seasoned CEO, if you believe in a kinder, braver, and more connected way of leading, there is a place for you in this community.
