Saturday 7th March marks a significant milestone in Hull’s maritime history as the Spurn Lightship, a beloved symbol of Hull’s seafaring heritage, is unveiled to the public following an extensive restoration programme.

The restoration effort has breathed new life into this historic vessel as well as maintaining its integrity as a historic ship, ensuring its legacy continues to shine brightly for generations to come.
Originally constructed in 1927, the Spurn Lightship has stood as a steadfast guardian, guiding ships safely through the treacherous waters of the Humber Estuary for nearly a century. However, over time, the elements took their toll, and the vessel needed some TLC. Thanks to Hull City Council and the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Spurn Lightship has been sympathetically restored to its former glory.
The comprehensive restoration project, encompassed a wide range of efforts, including structural repairs and the refurbishment of the interior and below deck, maintaining its integrity. Every detail has been carefully considered to preserve the historical integrity of the vessel while providing an immersive and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, expressed his delight at the completion of the restoration, he said: “The reopening of the Spurn Lightship is a momentous occasion for the city of Hull and a testament to our commitment to preserving our maritime heritage.
“This vessel holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike, and its restoration, thanks to National Lottery players, ensures that its legacy will endure for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.”
Helen Featherstone, Director, England, North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “It is incredibly exciting to see this element of the Hull Maritime project completed and the Spurn Lightship now open to the public.
“It is thanks to National Lottery players that we have been able to support the restoration of this historic vessel, ensuring its rich story is preserved and shared with visitors near and far for generations to come. This work is a fantastic celebration of the city’s maritime heritage and contributes to the ongoing cultural renaissance of Hull.”
The restored Spurn Lightship will serve as a living testament to Hull’s rich maritime history, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and explore the vital role that the vessel played in safeguarding the region’s waters. From its distinctive lantern to its towering mast, every aspect of the Spurn Lightship tells a story of resilience, ingenuity, and the enduring spirit of the maritime community.
As the Spurn Lightship opens its doors once again, it invites visitors to embark on a journey through time, celebrating the maritime heritage of Hull and the indomitable spirit of those who have sailed its waters for long periods of time. It is the first maritime treasure to open as part of the Hull Maritime project.
