Hull-based eco-cleaning product manufacturer Bio-D has announced its impressive sustainability results in its seventh annual Sustainability and Impact Report.

Founded 37 years ago with a mission to create safe and effective cleaning products that protect both people and the planet, Bio-D has made continuous efforts to reduce its environmental impact. The result is a 44% reduction in CO2 emissions per single product manufactured in just five years – 5.7% of which has been over the past year alone.

Bio-D also celebrated successfully increasing its B Corporation Certification score by 30% – surpassing its own internal target and positioning Bio-D in the ranks of ‘outstanding’ B Corp performers.

Heather Nixon, sustainability, NPD and regulatory manager at Bio-D, commented: “The release of our latest report reflects another year of significant progress in our commitment to create cleaning products without compromising the planet.

“Everything we do is driven by the commitment of our team, customers and suppliers, and each small change we make collectively becomes real, measurable progress.

“We also hear from our customers, who share stories about how our products have helped them to make more sustainable choices, which is incredibly rewarding and puts real value on the work we do to create truly eco-friendly cleaning products.”

Over the past year, Bio-D’s closed loop laundering initiative – allowing customers to return empty 20 litre product containers to be cleaned, refilled and reused – has also prevented 9.5 tonnes of plastic waste from going to landfill, saving the equivalent CO2 emissions of 1,210 trees growing in a year.

The brand’s closed loop service has also seen a 21.5% increase in use year-on-year, demonstrating how reducing plastic consumption is still of importance to shoppers despite an increased cost of living.

Additional achievements detailed in Bio-D’s latest report include:

  • Its focus on refill size products (including five litres, 20 litres and intermediate bulk containers, or ‘IBCs’) saving over 1.95 million consumer bottles – a 10% increase on 2024
  • Generating over 22.5% more solar energy than needed on-site, making operations net-positive for electricity and contributing clean energy back to the grid
  • Saving 68 tonnes of CO2 emissions by using PCR plastic in its bottled packaging and caps
  • Undertaking over 100 in-house audits to verify it consistently meets high environmental and quality standards

In addition to its sustainability credentials, a survey completed by Bio-D staff found that 100% of team members were happy in their job, able to voice concerns or complaints and understand how their role contributes to the organisation’s overall vision and mission.

Not one to rest on its laurels, Bio-D is continuing to set itself goals for further reducing its environmental impact, planning to further reduce emissions throughout 2026 alongside investing in carbon emission reduction projects.
