This June, Hull Independent Cinema is bringing three highly original, must-see independent and experimental film screenings at Hull Truck Theatre.
On Saturday 15 June, we screen Woman at War, directed by Benedikt Erlingsson. Following his critically acclaimed feature film debut, Of Horses and Men, Erlingsson tackles the timely issue of climate change in his unique, eccentric style. Set in the pastoral environment of rural Iceland, the film tells the story of Halla, a fifty-year-old independent woman, who behind the facade of a quiet routine leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. Known to others only as her alias, “The Woman of the Mountain”, Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminium industry.
“There is a warmth, wit and wisdom that transcend national and cultural boundaries, making this a truly universal treat.” (The Observer)
On Tuesday 25 June, Hull Independent Cinema presents “one of the boldest and most invigorating American films of the 21st Century” (Indiewire). Directed by Josephine Decker, who has been dubbed “the new mother of indie cinema” (Huckmag), Madeline’s Madeline is a “feverish psychological thriller” (The Observer) that will haunt audiences long after they have left the auditorium.
The film follows the story of Madeline, a vulnerable teenage girl, who has joined a prestigious physical theatre troupe. When the workshop’s ambitious director pushes the teenager to weave her rich interior world and troubled history with her mother into their collective art, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur. The resulting battle between imagination and appropriation rips out of the rehearsal space and through all three women’s lives.
We end the month in style on 26 June with 100 Films in 100 Minutes.
Specially commissioned by and presented in partnership with Kyiv International Short Film Festival, this screening comprises one hundred extremely short films from all corners of the globe. Drama, romance, documentary, animation and more – it’s all here! Special discount ticket prices are available for this screening.
