Hull Trains reveals the secrets to top train trips with kids

The secrets to enjoying a relaxing train journey with your kids have been revealed by one of Hull Trains’ Onboard Managers.

Harriet is passionate about encouraging parents to give train travel a go

Harriet Smith joined the company in 2024 and is responsible for keeping customers safe and well looked after throughout their journeys. As a mum of two young girls herself, she is passionate about ensuring that families feel comfortable enough to use the train to explore what’s on their doorstep.

Rail travel is by far the most relaxing and sustainable way to travel, perfect for families looking to reduce their carbon footprint, with just 1.5 percent of transport emissions coming from train journeys. With children under five travelling for free on most Hull Trains journeys too, it’s the best option for parents keeping an eye on their budgets in 2026.

Here are Harriet’s top tips:

1: Book early and directly for the best prices: The Hull Trains website is the best place to get great deals on your journeys, with a quick and easy booking system.

2: There’s nothing wrong with moving around: The great thing about train travel is that you’re free to move around the carriage, that means no car seats and a happier journey for fidgety little ones! A stretch of the legs is perfect if they’re getting restless.

3: Get to the station in plenty of time: Nobody likes to rush and there’s no harm in arriving for your train a little early. Use the time to spot a variety of colourful trains on the East Coast Main Line and then get on board in good time, find your reserved seats and safely arrange your luggage and pram.

4: It’s time to get creative: Ask one of the Hull Trains team for a free ‘kids activity pack’, which features special train-themed puzzles and colouring activities to get them excited about the journey as well as the destination.

5: Pack a spare outfit: We all know that spillages happen but don’t worry, it’s easy to change your little ones in spacious toilets on board, which all have a baby changing facility too.

6: Enjoy some snacks and drinks on your journey: You can get everything you need on the train, whether it’s snacks for your kids or caffeine to prepare you for the day. Hull Trains offers a range of tasty local products. We’re also happy to warm up bottled milk for your little ones too.

7: Just ask: If you’re feeling worried or stressed about absolutely anything, your onboard team are here to help you and put your mind at ease. We’re all in it together!

Harriet is hoping that even more families will consider train travel this year: “I’ve done plenty of exploring with my two girls and they love our little adventures on the train. I’m also conscious of teaching them to look after the planet. That, along with the great value, makes using the train a no-brainer. It’s also lovely for us to properly spend time together as a family.”

There’s plenty of exciting attractions that are easy to visit on a Hull Trains service: Families can enjoy the thrill of a visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, with a direct bus from Doncaster Station. The National Trust’s historic Belton Estate near Grantham, meanwhile, is a brilliant option for families to get some fresh air. Visitors to the estate can even take a ride on an exciting miniature railway.
