Hull Truck Theatre are looking for local people to perform in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This July, Hull Truck Theatre will present a community production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream where audiences will be transported to an enchanted forest near Athens for a night of magic and mayhem.

Members of the local community aged 18+ are now invited to help bring Shakespeare’s entertaining and hilarious comedy to life. Hull Truck Theatre are holding a series of FREE taster workshops where people can come and get a sense of what it will be like to take part before making a commitment. Everyone is welcome, no experience is necessary and there are a mixture of speaking and non-speaking roles available.

This is a great opportunity to make friends, develop new skills and have fun exploring acting and movement whilst creating a range of characters from Bottom the Weaver and his comedy crew to Oberon and Titania, King, and Queen of the Fairies.

Also taking part will be members of HTT’s Youth Theatre alumni and Act III (over 55’s theatre makers).

The FREE workshops will take place: Tuesday 19 April 10am – 12pm, Friday 22 April 6.30pm – 8.30pm, Friday 29 April 6.30pm – 8.30pm and Saturday 7 May 10.30 – 12.30pm.

Rehearsals will then take place on Wednesday evenings from 7pm starting in May, with large cast rehearsals taking place on every Saturday and Sunday in June. Performances at Hull Truck Theatre will take place Saturday 2nd July until Saturday 9th July.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will build on the success of our youth theatre production, Our Mutual Friend, as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Over 60 performers aged 11+ took to the stage to present this classic story by Charles Dickens, adapted by Bryony Lavery and transported to the banks of the river Humber. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be created with the same intentions of putting local people and voices centre stage to present something large-scale, with all the high-quality values of a Hull Truck Theatre production.

Tom Saunders, Director, said:

“This city is full of extremely talented people, so I’m delighted to be staging this with a community company. Shakespeare’s rich and beautiful language paired with Hull’s vibrant and creative communities will be an absolute treat.

During the arc of our 50th anniversary year we’ve told our origin story in 71 Coltman Street, will shortly be celebrating John Godber’s time at the company with Teechers Leavers ’22 and it feels right that the next step is to put local people centre stage.”
