Make Sanc your happy place this summer

Over 330,000 drinks and just under 100,000 plates have been served up in the first six months of the opening of the first Wetherspoons on a university campus.

Sanctuary Bar, affectionately known as Sanc, became a Wetherspoon pub at the start of this year after Hull University Students’ Union (HUSU) teamed up in a unique partnership with the pub and hotel chain to open the first ‘spoons’ on campus.

Since then the move has been hailed a resounding success with over 73,000 pints pulled, over 10, 500 bottles of beer, cider, and lager served, over 27, 000 main meals dished up and 13,700 breakfasts.

HUSU President of Union Development Huey Arslan said: “The figures speak for themselves and it is clear to see that everyone, from students to staff and members of the general public, really value having a Wetherspoon on campus.

“The affordable and varied food and drinks available are clearly appreciated, especially at a time when the cost of living is affecting everyone in the community.

“It is fantastic to see such a well-used and much appreciated resource on campus now open all year round. We are looking forward to a busy summer period, and an even busier start to the academic year in September.

“We thank everyone for their continued support in what is proving to be an incredibly successful partnership and we are happy to be able to say that the profits from our Union ‘Spoons’ go back into improving the university experience for our students”.

Now the summer months are here customers, including members of the public, are taking advantage of what is probably Hull’s largest beer garden, as well as enjoying a packed programme of live sport, including Test Match Cricket and Wimbledon, which is being screened daily.

Food is served until 11pm and the pub is open to the public including young families.

JD Wetherspoon Spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “Since opening in January our pub at Hull University has proven very popular with students, as well as the general public.

Students like the range of drink and food on offer, competitive prices, and the fact that they have a Wetherspoon pub on their door step.”
