Following their open call for script submissions in July 2020, Silent Uproar theatre company are now announcing their supported writers: THE TROUBLEMAKERS.
MAKING TROUBLE supports daring northern voices to get them onto northern stages. The plan consists of seed commissions, support grants, workshops, scratch nights and further commissioning/producing opportunities. All writers involved receive regular 1-to-1 support and most importantly – cash.
Silent Uproar have branded the plan MAKING TROUBLE as they want the artists they work with to be able to cause joyous and progressive trouble that will inspire and excite a younger crowd.
Following their open call for script submissions in 2020, the following writers joined the programme for a year. The supported writers are:
- Alison Carr
- Olivia Hannah
- Olivia Hirst
- Nana-Kofi Kufuor
- Maureen Lennon
- Joshua Val Martin
Alex Mitchell, Artistic Director of Silent Uproar, said: “This new programme will allow us to support more writers than ever before, to dream up new shows for future theatregoers.
“We are ecstatic to be working with such an incredible group of artists from across the north of England. These brilliant writers will play a crucial role in shaping Silent Uproar’s future work, and our commitment to welcoming a younger, punkier, and funkier crowd to a night at the theatre.
“MAKING TROUBLE came about after chatting to some amazing northern writers about barriers and difficulties that they faced in their careers- and then brewing up some ideas together to creatively tear down those barriers.”
MAKING TROUBLE is also a long-term commitment to platform daring northern voices on northern stages and in northern communities. Moving forward Silent Uproar will place a greater emphasis on touring across the North of England. Ultimately this work will lead to great nights out that truly reflects, represents, and excites communities across the North.
MAKING TROUBLE is supported by a cohort of organisations including Arts Council England, Hull City Council, Hull Truck Theatre, Middle Child Theatre, Sheffield Theatres, Stephen Joseph Theatre (Scarborough), Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatres, and Red Ladder. Their support has been vital in launching this new programme and we are moved by their encouragement, time, and guidance.
