Seven short films commissioned by Beverley Minster’s Sanctuary Project form the main feature of a night of local films at Humber Film Community in Hull’s Old Town on Wednesday 30 June and Wednesday 7 July.
The historically accurate films focus on separate real life medieval characters who claimed sanctuary in Beverley, fleeing to the Minster in the 15th and 16th Centuries after committing some kind of crime.
Developed, produced and shot during the Covid pandemic the films have been written and produced by Humber Film members and include original music by Phil Codd and bespoke medieval costume design by Sarah Johnson.
Shot in and around Beverley including at the Minster, the YHA’s Beverley Friary, The Monk’s Walk pub and on the Westwood, lead acting roles are taken by local actors Steve Mawson, Tarin Puckering, Zipporah Kuria, Jon Wright, Laurence Ellerker, Lex Stephenson, Tim Bettridge, Charlie Eden, Stan Haywood, James Crowther, Matt McLoud, Chris Pearson and Finn McGuigan. Directors are Phil Codd, Alex Davies, Chris Hopkin, Ian Winter and Julian Woodford.
The two screening nights will also show a selection of new and previously unseen films by Humber Film members and other local filmmakers, including Steve Willis’ narrative short, Dave; Martin Lewsley’s pond life art-doc, Saga of the Frog Children; SHE Productions’ animated and live action Storytellas (animated by Alex Davies), and Phil Codd’s award-winning short Of Human Kindness.
Full Covid-19 social distancing and sanitising measures will be in place for the screenings and food and drink available.
Working collaboratively, Humber Film has previously produced: Open Bridges, a 20-minute multi-camera aural and musical documentary for Hull City of Culture’s Freedom Season; and A Place They Called ‘Forgotten Town’, for Hull City of Culture 2017 – Creative Communities Programme.
