National Coming Out Day – Grandma’s Story

How would you feel if your grandchild came out as gay? Would you accept them and love them no matter what, or would you find it difficult to accept their sexuality as it goes against everything you believe in?

This is Grandma’s story.

PODCAST: 10 minutes.

Grandma’s Story – an audio drama by Josh Whittingham, for National Coming Out Day, 2020.

Grandma’s Story, by Hull writer Josh Whittingham, was originally produced for Leicester Digital Pride by Xtra Features and was streamed live as part of the Pride festivities on September 5th 2020.

Xtra Features is a new project founded by father and son team Jerome Whittingham and Josh Whittingham. The project will explore social issues through audio drama and documentary.

Josh Whittingham, recently returned to Hull after graduating this summer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Leicester, said: “As an outreach volunteer for Leicester charity Trade Sexual Health whilst studying in the city, and a member of the LGBT community, I was thrilled to write this piece for the Digital Pride event. I hope my drama will reach those members of our community who are afraid to come out in case the reaction of their family is negative, particularly grandparents who may be struggling to accept the sexuality of their grandchildren.”

National Coming Out Day takes place annually on the 11th October. The day celebrates LGBT+ people’s confidence in coming out, providing support to those that do so.
