New community sensory area at Ings Library thanks to HTAE learners

Level 1 Painting and Decorating learners from Hull Training and Adult Education (HTAE) have been putting their skills to the test in a hands-on community project at Ings Library, delivering a vibrant makeover to two key rooms.

The initiative began with a plan to refresh a single space into a new sensory area for the community.

However, thanks to the learners’ enthusiasm and commitment, the project quickly expanded to include the staff room, with both areas successfully redecorated.

The sensory room, now known as The Lounge, will be enjoyed by the local community for years to come and features reading areas, soft toys, IT equipment, sensory lighting and positive messages on the walls.

The success of the project will inspire the learners to continue developing their skills and confidence in the trade.

Mia Clarkson, 16, joined HTAE in September after attending taster sessions and took part in the project, using it to gain on the job experience.

She said: “This is the first time I’ve worked on a community project like this. It’s been really good to see the transformation and great to have some real-world experience of what painting and decorating is like ‘on the job’.

“We’ve been working on a new sensory room and also the staff room, which were very tired and ready for a new lease of life.

“I feel like my fortune is definitely in the trade and I hope to progress onto Level 2 and eventually find an employer.

“It’s been tiring but a great experience and all the tutors have been supportive.

“During Covid, I kept myself busy with decorating projects at home and recently I’ve done some panelling in my room, from design to making and painting.”

Julie Sockett, library and information manager at Ings Library, praised the learners’ work.

She said: “We contacted Hull Training and Adult Education about the idea of refreshing a room here at Ings Library after receiving some community funding to create a sensory room.

“I spoke with Matthew Bibby, Painting and Decorating tutor, about giving the learners some real-world experience on-site, and it’s been fantastic to see it come together.

“The learners have done everything – from preparation and furniture moving to completing the painting and tidying up afterwards.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by their enthusiasm, professionalism and friendliness.

“We originally planned for just one room to be decorated, but the group worked so efficiently that they were able to complete two.

“It’s been a brilliant opportunity for them to learn in a real working environment, and we are delighted with the results.”
