NHS staff go the extra mile for mental health recovery

A committed team from the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Miranda House in Hull, part of Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, have launched a series of fundraising challenges this summer.

Their goal is to raise £4,000 to support enhanced patient care locally and promote brighter futures for people facing mental health crises.

The PICU provides critical intensive care and supervision for adults during periods of acute mental illness. Now, its compassionate staff are channelling their energy and creativity into fundraising activities that will fund therapeutic resources and improve the ward environment to further support recovery.

To kick off their efforts, the team completed a 24-hour, Tour-de-France-inspired cycling challenge, covering an impressive 120 miles.

Upcoming events include:

  • Walk to Hornsea (9 August): A 15.3-mile journey from Miranda House to Hornsea, raising awareness and funds in stride
  • Skydive Challenge (6 September): Staff leap from the skies to show their unwavering support
  • Inflatable 10K Obstacle Run (20 September): A high-energy, laughter-filled race through giant inflatable obstacles
  • HYROX Birmingham (24 October): A grueling fitness competition testing strength, stamina, and solidarity

Alicja, Staff Nurse at PICU, said:

“Working in PICU, we witness the strength it takes to recover, and the importance of kindness, dignity, and hope in that process.

“Many of our patients come to us during deeply distressing periods of their lives. By improving our ward environment and adding small but meaningful touches, we believe we can offer more than just treatment: we can offer comfort, inspiration, and a sense of care that lasts far beyond discharge.”

Donations and support are welcomed to help the team reach their goal and make a lasting difference in the lives of their patients.
