NHS Trust hosts sixth form psychology students for interactive event

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is committed to building an enduring future in mental health. Psychologists are a vital part of the system and this week the Trust welcomed 45 psychology students from Wyke 6th Form College for an inspiring and informative event with psychological staff in the Trust.

The format of the day was varied and diverse with students taking part in interactive workshops with a range of experienced psychological professionals, including Clinical and Trainee Psychologists, a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist, Principal Psychotherapist and Clinical Lead.

Students were also given a great opportunity to enjoy an informal session in an area they might not have considered. The Trust operates a Forensic Division which includes inpatient units for patients who have often been in contact with the judicial system. Consultant Forensic Psychologist and Professional Lead, Sarah Rockcliff, was able to deliver invaluable insight into careers and progression within psychology.

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust already works closely with local education providers to support the next generation of the workforce. The Trust provides a wide range of opportunities for students, including T Level placements, work experience opportunities, and apprenticeships across many of its services.

Many students are often surprised to learn that careers in the NHS are not limited to traditional clinical roles. From digital and estates to administration, therapies and community services, there are a wide variety of career pathways available. Through its partnerships with schools and colleges, the Trust is raising awareness of these opportunities and help more young people understand the breadth of careers available at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust and the wider NHS.

This event was the first the Trust has hosted and these opportunities to connect with aspiring psychologists paves the way for the future of psychology. The students were particularly keen to meet and talk with professionals working across different specialisms.
