Local schoolboy Jack Barnacle, age seven, from Welton Primary School turned his hand to bricklaying as he helped to construct the eagerly anticipated show home, at Harrier Chase.
The activity followed a competition at Welton Primary School held in November 2017, to name the Brough development. Jack’s entry for ‘Harrier Chase’ was commended for its historical context in reference to the nearby British Aerodrome, which manufactured the Harrier Jump Jet. The perimeter of the site was also home to a race track circuit between 1947 and 1957, where Sir Stirling Moss secured his first ever race win – hence the inspired name, Harrier Chase.
In an extract taken from ‘Stirling Moss: My Racing Life’, the acclaimed Formula One racing driver references his first race, in Brough: ‘My first actual race came at Brough in July, on a little track using part of a wartime airfield near Hull. In pouring rain I won my heat and the final, and also a handicap race after starting at the back. I was gratified to see coverage in the Daily Mail, under the headline Brough Race Won by Back Marker. Even more gratifying was my prize money of £13.’
As a reward for winning the competition, Jack was invited to cement the first brick in the show home garage of the development’s sought after four-bedroom detached Radleigh property – a very special moment for Jack and a key milestone in the development’s construction process.
On hand to assist with the bricklaying activity was trio Jerry Petch, bricklayer at Harrier Chase, Mark Greenley, Site Manager at Harrier Chase and Dave Turner, Assistant Site Manager at Harrier Chase.
Emma Watson, Sales Adviser at Harrier Chase, added: “We took great delight in inviting Jack to Harrier Chase to officially lay the first brick and get our show home underway. Jack deservedly won the development naming competition, showing great imagination and a keen knowledge of the local area. We hope to work again with the children at Welton Primary School in the not-too-distant-future.”
