The launch of “Come Out!” – A new era led by queer and allied voices

Hull-based theatre company, Silent Uproar, launches a new initiative, working title ‘Come Out!’, a steering group of queer and allied voices who help shape the company’s programmes, projects and audience approach, starting in 2026.

Taking applicants as of 20th October, the new group is described as ‘part advisory crew, part think-tank, all around queer collective’. The group will bring together approximately eight members from a mix of backgrounds, age groups and lived experiences, with a strong focus on queer identity and alternative lifestyle. This group will collaborate with the Silent Uproar team to feed into show development and new activities, with a heavy focus on strengthening audiences and communications.

“We’ve always made work that is bold, full of heart and provocative,” said Artistic Director Alex Mitchell. “But also our nights out have been for people like ourselves who have not always felt welcomed or represented in mainstream spaces, the people we affectionately dub as the freaks, the weirdos and the geeks. Moving forward, we want to further celebrate that energy and want our audiences to feel empowered to be unapologetically themselves”

Silent Uproar’s past work includes A Super Happy Story About Feeling Super Sad, The Night of the Werewolves Live, and Sh*t Life Crisis. This new chapter marks a formal step into a commitment to amplify voices and reflect the real world beyond the stage.

The Come Out! group will be a sounding board and incubator for ideas, as well as a fantastic opportunity for networking, skill building and experience, being a potential springboard to foster real long-lived relationships with the individuals on the board and their wider communities, building out to queer-aligned networks across Hull, the North and nationally.

“This new group puts that energy right at the centre,” added Alex. “And with the world as it is right now, creating space that is safe and joyful, with room for important conversation, that’s important now more than ever. We want people with us who resonate with that.”
