They’ve recently celebrated news that they’re being funded by the Arts Council for another three years – now the Back to Ours team are spreading the love with the announcement of a free outdoor show at North Point Shopping Centre, and the return of Australian circus giants Casus to Hull for their October half term festival.
Back to Bransholme – a free, outdoor show in the car park of North Point – has been devised, produced and directed by the Back to Ours team. Born out of stories of a ghostly airman seen by locals in the shopping centre, the previous site of RAF Sutton upon Hull, it spans seventy decades of love, loss and laughter in what’s being described as ‘a 1940’s punk-pop circus opera.’
Back to Ours Director Louise Yates says: “We’re always up at Bransholme talking to people, and this story of the airman kept coming up. We knew straight away there was a story to be told.
“But we’re Back to Ours, aren’t we? So we’re mixing it all up with a pinch of punk, a dose of opera, a load of circus, dance, live music and a huge cast. It’s something completely new and ambitious, and we’re inviting people to get their big coats on and huddle up for a love story through the decades.
“It’s a celebration, part tragedy, part comedy – you’ll come away from it feeling uplifted and a bit emotional about what you’ve experienced.”
Back to Bransholme will run from Saturday 26 October to Tuesday 29 October, 8-9pm, and is free and unticketed.
If you were lucky enough to see the sell-out Driftwood during May 2018 half-term, you’ll know what a treat you’re in for when Casus Circus return with their latest show, DNA.
Exploring what it means to be human, seven incredible acrobats will be taking to the stage at Sirius Academy West Academy with tricks, tumbles and edge-of-the-seat skills – and Hull audiences can see it for just £3 a ticket.
Louise continues: “We just love Casus. They’re a joy to work with, and we’ve co-comissioned DNA so it was always coming to Hull.
“I’m not exaggerating when I say this is unmissable. It got four and five star reviews in Edinburgh; like the very core of Back to Ours it’s all about people and our connections with each other, so we fit together beautifully.
“You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll hold your breath – they’re just amazing performers who give everything.”
Natano Faanana Creative Producer and Co-Founder of Casus Circus added: “What Casus does well is share ourselves.
“We bring ourselves to the stage and share our art. Our family has grown, and with that family growth there are new stories, and we wanted to tap into those. We want to tell stories about what makes us who we are today.
“We immediately felt a bond with Back to Ours because their backbone is also people – having a good time, getting involved with programming, and going on that journey together.
“We can’t wait to get back to Hull and meet new audiences!”
DNA runs from Thursday 31 October to Sunday 4 Novembers. Tickets go on sale from 10am, Friday 27 September, available online and in person at hulltruck.co.uk, and in person from Sirius Academy West main school office.
