WJ Group MD to take on half-marathon challenge

The head of a Hull timber company is preparing to take on the Humber Bridge Half-Marathon this weekend after being challenged to complete the race by his daughter.

Lucy Eggleston has persuaded dad Mark, the MD of WJ Group, to run the 13.1 mile route with her to raise funds for the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham.

Mark, 51, founded WJ Group in 2007, supplying high-quality timber engineering and high-pressure timber treatments.

He said: “I completed the Yorkshire three peaks challenge at the end of May and Lucy convinced me to swap my walking boots for running trainers to join her in the half-marathon.

“Our family has been cared for at the Queen’s Centre, which looks after cancer patients, so with such a great cause to support, I couldn’t say no.

“We’ve both been training really hard so we will see who crosses the finishes line first on the day but as long as we raise money, it doesn’t matter who wins, or so I keep telling myself!”.

The Humber Bridge Half-Marathon takes place on Sunday (30th June) and marks the 20th anniversary of the race.

Lucy, 20, said: “I have done half-marathons before and decided to do the Humber Bridge one to raise money for the Queen’s Centre after they looked after my Grandad throughout his treatment for oesophageal cancer.

“Although the treatment was very intense, with the support and love of all his family and friends he has managed to come out the other side just as positive as he went in. We are unsure of what is still to come but the future is looking bright.

“That’s why my dad and I as well as a few family and friends are going to be running the Humber Bridge Half Marathon to raise money for the amazing work and support given not just to Grandad but every other patient who finds themselves at the centre.”
