Absolutely Cultured is proud to present an evening of physical performance in partnership with the University of Hull, taking place on 25 and 26 November.
The event is part of a series of pilots over the next year, which aim to offer more opportunities to experience dance and physical performance in Hull.
Acting as a double bill, each evening features two shows; “Triptych” by Hull- based artist Kristin McGuire and “Unbroken” by Nikki Rummer, one half of duo Nikki & JD.
Lindsay Stockley, Head of Creative Programmes for Absolutely Cultured, says:
“We are thrilled to be contributing to the development of dance in Hull by bringing a collection of exciting dance and circus shows to the city. We anticipate there will be an appetite from Hull audiences to see these performances and find out more about some of the incredible dance and circus companies that are touring the UK. Working in partnership with other local organisations, the programme will also provide additional opportunities for the local dance sector including networking opportunities and dance workshops from the visiting artists.”
“Triptych” is a series of three short choreographies that explore pole dance as an art form, which requires a great deal of sensuality, physical strength, balletic elegance and gymnastic grace. The performance incorporates mapped projections that evolve as the dance progresses across the performance area.
This piece is performed by Kristin McGuire whose professional dance career spans more than 20 years of performing and choreographing for an eclectic range of international dance and theatre companies, including Cirque du Soleil and Mark Bruce Company
“Unbroken” is the debut solo performance by physical theatre and circus artist, Nikki Rummer, on tour in autumn 2021 and spring 2022. One bittersweet Christmas, three generations of the Rummer family are summoned home for one last gathering. Combining her talent for storytelling and her unique movement language inspired by her acrobatics, gymnastics and capoeira practice, Rummer tells a very personal story with universal resonance.
There will be a post-show artist talk following the second night performance, featuring both Nikki Rummer and Kristin McGuire, along with Absolutely Cultured’s CEO and Artistic Director, Stephen Munn. Tickets for 26 November automatically include access to this post-show talk and both the performance and talk will be BSL interpreted on this evening. To shape future pilot projects, audiences will be invited to share their views and feedback on their experience of the show. Absolutely Cultured will also be hosting an informal networking session with University of Hull students ahead of the shows.
An evening of physical performance with Kristin McGuire and Nikki Rummer will take place at The Donald Roy Theatre, The Gulbenkian Centre, The University of Hull, HU6 7RX and doors open at 7pm. General admission is £8, with concession tickets available at £5 for students and over 65s. Tickets are available to book here.
