Simon Himsworth, Chief Executive of Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, has attended a special reception at 10 Downing Street in recognition of the charity’s work supporting older people during the summer heatwaves.
Simon was invited to the reception on Monday 21st September as one of just nine representatives from across the national Age UK network, recognising the efforts of local Age UK organisations that went above and beyond to provide vital support to older people during periods of extreme heat in summer 2026.
The reception brought together representatives from across the country to recognise the important role charities, their staff, and volunteers played in helping older and potentially vulnerable people stay safe, informed, and connected during the exceptionally hot weather.
Simon represented Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire and the communities it serves across Hull and the East Riding.
Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire is an independent local charity which has supported older people in the area for more than 70 years. Its staff and volunteers provide a range of services to help older people, their families and carers, including information and advice, befriending and practical support.
Simon Himsworth, Chief Executive of Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire, said: “It was a tremendous honour to be invited to 10 Downing Street and to represent Age UK Hull & East Yorkshire alongside colleagues from across the Age UK network.
“It was a fantastic day and a very special recognition of the work that goes on every day to support older people in our communities.
“While I had the privilege of attending the reception, this recognition really belongs to our whole team. During the summer heatwaves, our staff and volunteers went above and beyond to make sure older people had the support, information and reassurance they needed.
“I was incredibly proud to represent them, and the older people of Hull and the East Riding, at Downing Street.”
The invitation also highlighted the importance of local charities being able to respond quickly when extreme weather and other challenges place additional pressures on older people.
Simon added: “Periods of extreme heat can be particularly difficult for older people, especially those who live alone or may already be experiencing health, mobility or isolation challenges.
“Our focus is always on making sure older people across Hull and East Yorkshire can access the support they need, when they need it. To see that work recognised nationally is something everyone connected with our charity can be proud of.”
