A young female joiner at acclaimed regional housebuilder Beal Homes has been named Apprentice of the Year at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Erin Symons, who began her apprenticeship with Beal just 18 months ago, has made remarkable strides in her role, quickly becoming an integral part of the housebuilder’s site-based team.
At just 17 years old, Erin has already demonstrated her dedication, skill and passion for joinery, earning her the accolade of Apprentice of the Year at the Hull and East Yorkshire People in Business Awards.
The awards, now in their fifth year, celebrate outstanding achievements in the Hull and East Yorkshire business community.
Speaking about her award win, Erin said: “I’m honoured and incredibly proud to have been recognised with this award.
“I pursued a career in joinery because my dad is a joiner, and it’s something that has always interested me.
“Being a female joiner isn’t common, but I’d encourage anyone to follow their passion. Since joining the team at Beal I’ve worked on several developments, and the support I’ve received from all of my colleagues has been fantastic.”
This is not the first award Erin has secured, having also won Construction Centre Apprentice of the Year at awards run by training provider Hull Training and Adult Education.
Erin grew up in Hull and attended Malet Lambert School, before being invited for an interview with East Yorkshire-based Beal.
She is now playing her part in breaking the glass ceiling in what remains a male-dominated profession, inspiring more young women to pursue careers in joinery and construction.
Beal Construction Director Andy Devine praised Erin’s exceptional contributions to the company, saying she is an inspiration to others considering a career in the construction industry.
He said: “Erin has rapidly grown into a valuable team member and we’re delighted she has won this award. She has already demonstrated that she has the skills, personality and passion to succeed and thrive.
“Erin is methodical, meticulous, and has exceeded all expectations on site. Her rapport with colleagues is fantastic, and she is held in very high regard.
“I’d like to congratulate Erin for her latest award in what is a hugely exciting start to her career. Having seen the progress Erin has made with Beal over the last 18 months, no one at the business will be surprised to hear of her success.”
Since joining Beal, Erin has displayed a remarkable ability to learn and adapt.
Within just nine months, Erin was already hanging doors, fitting stair handrails and spindles, and reading site drawings with ease.
Erin’s commitment to her college work, coupled with her hands-on experience on-site, has allowed her to develop a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of joinery within the housebuilding industry.
From joisting to roofing and even kitchen installations, Erin has proven herself to be more than capable and her ability to communicate effectively with colleagues across all levels has further cemented her position as a valuable team member.
