Builder’s cash helps Hull tennis club get ready for 100th anniversary

A tennis club in Cottingham will be accessible to all, following a donation from a housebuilder.

Cottingham Tennis Club is celebrating its centenary this year and a £1,000 award, from the Persimmon Homes Community Champions scheme, will help to deliver disable facilities.

The tennis clubhouse, on Hull Road, will mark its 100th anniversary in May and club members have been busy renovating the building and grounds ready for the landmark celebration.

Doug Jennings, chairman for Cottingham Tennis Club said: “This is a very special year for the club.  Our clubhouse has served members and the community well but naturally after 100 years it needs a few improvements.

“Thanks to our team of volunteers and donations from local businesses and members and grants from the East Riding Council and Cottingham Parish Council we have refurbished the social and bar area, changing rooms, upgraded the kitchen, replaced the roof, installed new floodlights and new drainage.

“Our next project is a new terrace area and improvements for wheelchair visitors and members.  Persimmon Homes’ donation will help us to install wheelchair access as well as a disabled toilet.

“This is wonderful news for the club, and we are incredibility grateful for the support of the community.”

The Persimmon Homes Community Champions scheme donates up to £64,000 across the UK each month, of which the Persimmon Homes Yorkshire region provides financial support of up to £1,000 to two good causes in the local area.

Scott Waters, managing director at Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, said: “A century of community tennis in Cottingham deserves a big celebration. The East Riding and Hull remain key areas of development for us so we are happy to help get the clubhouse ready for another 100 years.”
