An audience of 150 film lovers welcomed the January to March 2022 season of films at Hull Independent Cinema in fine style on Thursday 6 January.
The screening of Wes Anderson’s latest film THE FRENCH DISPATCH had been included in the new programme at the last minute in response to audience demand. It is the first of fourteen film screenings over the next three months being organised by the local charity, which exists to bring the best of independent, foreign language and speciality film to local audiences. Screenings take place at Vue Cinema Hull Princes Quay and Hull Truck Theatre.
Highlights of the new season include Paul Thomas Anderson’s new 1970s coming-of-age drama LICORICE PIZZA, currently receiving rave reviews from the critics; Julia Ducournau’s bold French body horror TITANE, which won the coveted Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival; and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directing debut THE LOST DAUGHTER, starring Olivia Colman.
Special events in the programme include a new short film by a local filmmaker (details TBC) preceding the screening of Céline Sciamma’s latest masterpiece PETITE MAMAN, recorded introductions and Q&As at the showing of Japanese drama DRIVE MY CAR and controversial Romanian satire BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN, and an in-person live Q&A featuring the makers of new British historical drama LAPWING, shot on the nearby Lincolnshire coast.
HIC’s regular partners Yorkshire Silents also return with a screening of STEAMBOAT BILL JR. starring Buster Keaton and featuring some of the most recognisable and iconic stunts and action sequences in early film history, accompanied by a live improvised piano score.
James Russell, Chair of Trustees at Hull Independent Cinema, said, “We’re really looking forward to a successful season of films to start 2022. There are lots of great new films around now and narrowing them all down to the final programme was a difficult job! We’re really pleased that the season has started with such a great audience at THE FRENCH DISPATCH, justifying the decision to include it at the last minute.”
This year Hull Independent Cinema is introducing a new benefit for HIC members, who will be able to buy tickets for one specially selected film for just £1. This season’s choice is Sudanese drama YOU WILL DIE AT TWENTY, winner of the Best Debut Feature award at the Venice Film Festival.
Full details of the film programme, how to buy tickets, and how to become an HIC member are available on the HIC website (hullindependentcinema.com), and copies of the film programme are also available at all screenings and from bars, cafés, shops and other locations around the city.
