Charity asks sports fans to help support their teams stay safe

National first aid and healthcare charity St John Ambulance is giving local football and rugby fans an opportunity to join a new team of first aid volunteers who will specialise in stadium first aid.

The charity is hoping that Hull City and the town’s rugby supporters will step forward to train as first aiders and volunteer at either the MKM Stadium or The Sewell Group Craven Park Stadium during home football and rugby games, or both.

Applicants need to live in Hull and the surrounding areas and those who are successful will join experienced first aiders and healthcare professionals as part of a big team to keep everyone safe.

St John Ambulance will provide volunteers with free training, free uniform, reasonable travel expenses, free refreshments during the matches and, of course, there will be no admission costs to the games when undertaking first aid duties. Volunteers may also be able to attend some away games with St John Ambulance.

The charity hopes that through this scheme it can bring together a team of passionate adult volunteers to help continue keeping supporters safe.

New volunteers will learn a range of essential lifesaving skills, be able to attend matches and be part of the atmosphere whilst knowing they are playing a key role in keeping fans safe.

The key requirements for joining will be four days of mandatory training, followed by attending as many home games as you can, helping to save lives, and care for those in need.

All successful applicants will additionally need to pass a free Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check before they can be accepted into the group.

Peter Howie CStJ, Regional Commissioner for the North East at St John Ambulance, said: “Our aim is to keep supporters safe at matches and, to do this, we are looking for enthusiastic local adults to step forward and volunteer.

“This will allow us to expand our great first aid team at Hull MKM and The Sewell Group Craven Park Stadium.”

An initial recruitment day will take place on Sunday 14 January 2024.

Anyone interested in joining St John should attend this event and also ensure that they are free on the training days on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 February, and Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 March 2024.

Anyone who is interested in this opportunity can express their interest by emailing Hull@sja.org.uk before Thursday 11 January 2024.

If you can’t attend the dates above but are still interested in joining the volunteer team or if you have any questions, please email anyway and the charity can support you with other opportunities.
