Family Mediation Week: “Your peace of mind is our top priority”

We had a chat with Alison Benson at Rollits about Family Mediation Week and what it’s all about.

Alison Benson heads up the Family team at Rollits, so Family Mediation Week is an especially busy time for her. The national event is run by the Family Mediation Council, which most mediators, including those at Rollits, are accredited through. Taking place each January, Family Mediation Week promotes the crucial role of mediators through videos, seminars, talks and presentations.

“Mediation is an option that can help couples and families who are going through the process of separation,” explains Alison. “The client attends an initial meeting with one of our mediators to discuss which issues need resolving. We then provide practical guidance around key issues, such as the resources and options available. This makes what could otherwise be a very stressful process run much more smoothly.”

Alison tells us that the mediator also decides if mediation is the appropriate route for a couple. For instance, there could be safeguarding issues regarding children, so the mediator explains whether mediation is the most suitable approach.

“When mediation is suitable, it helps a couple to make decisions for themselves, rather than having a decision imposed by a judge,” says Alison. “It can also reduce the cost and amount of time involved, which reduces the burden and keeps everyone on the same page as part of a mutual agreement.”

A mediator always remains impartial in order to help separating couples reach a conclusion that’s right for them and their family circumstances. This helps people to co-parent together and resolve finances so that both sides can move forward in their new and separate lives.

Alison has been a Family Law specialist for twenty years. Heading up the Family department at Rollits, a large part of her role is to manage the team of highly experienced lawyers who have a range of both qualifications and experience. Together they support people through a legal court process if required, as well as providing a pragmatic, solution-based process through mediation.

“We work very closely with all of our colleagues at Rollits,” adds Alison. “We’re a close-knit firm and our focus is on collaborating as much as possible so that all of our clients receive an outstanding service and tailored guidance. Supporting families is crucial, as any children need to be placed at the heart of the solution. As well as their general welfare, this also includes which schools the children will attend, any medical issues, and the allocation of finances.”

Family Mediation Week is a great opportunity to find out more about mediation, although Alison encourages anyone who requires information to get in touch at any time throughout the year:

“Don’t be frightened to pick up the phone and have a chat with our team. This will enable you to gain some expert knowledge about your personal situation and how to move forward. We appreciate that it can be an emotional time for you, so our mediators and lawyers offer reassurance as well as information and advice. Your peace of mind is our top priority.”
