We had a chat with Jake Gosling of Sticky Studios and Goldun Egg Records about HoH Food Hall’s exciting music programme.
A multi-platinum and Grammy award-winning producer and songwriter, Jake Gosling owns and runs Sticky Studios, an independent music recording studio in Surrey. His role at HoH Food Hall is to bring an eclectic range of music, perfectly complementing the wide-ranging food and retail offering.
When we spoke to Jake, he was busy preparing to visit the Houses of Parliament to campaign for the rights of songwriters on behalf of The Ivors Academy as part of the #BrokenRecord campaign. This instantly gave us a feel for his genuine passion for music and supporting the artists who create it.
“Fairness and representation for musicians is crucial,” said Jake. “This will be an integral part of HoH Food Hall from day one, as we’re dedicated to ensuring that all artists who contribute to our music offering are paid fairly, whether it’s in the form of live acts or receiving royalties when we share their music as part of our playlists.”
A core member of the HoH Food Hall team, Jake has been busy sourcing local artists and seeing what’s available in our local area:
“There’s a massive creative scene in Hull, so we’re tapping into it and bringing top talent to the city centre. Our mission is to support local acts, which begins with three days of performances during the launch weekend.”
The launch weekend begins today (Friday 3 December) and runs until Sunday. There will be live acts on the hour every hour on the stage in Vinyl Lounge, making it a huge celebration that everyone can get involved in.
Jake adds: “The music programme focuses on unplugged music, so you can expect a lot of acoustic acts going forward as well as plenty of versatile playlists. On Sundays we’ll invite people to choose which albums they want to listen to whilst grabbing a bite to eat, making it a truly interactive experience. From the latest releases available from Bug Vinyl Records to all kinds of cult classics, we’ll have an endless variety of tunes playing in the relaxing Vinyl Lounge.”
During December, Jake says that the playlists will have a festive vibe, with indie versions of Christmas tracks inviting diners and shoppers to celebrate the season. In January this will be replaced by a new playlist, which will change every month and involve local artists.
“We’re also building a recording studio and rehearsal rooms beneath the food hall,” says Jake. “This will magnify our music programme and provide high-quality facilities that many artists may otherwise find difficult to access.”
Dedicated to making HoH Food Hall a vibrant hub where people can enjoy exciting experiences in a family-friendly environment, Jake is also making sure that all music goes through the proper channels. As a result, every track is logged and each artist will receive a royalty.
“Music is often considered an add-on but we believe it’s a vital element,” explains Jake. “The building has so much cultural history, so we’re making it a place where new artists and young talent can find a platform for sharing their work. The rejuvenation isn’t just in terms of music either, as local graffiti artists and mural painters Spray Creative have added some amazing decoration to the surroundings.”
Despite living and working in Surrey, Jake is in Hull for the full launch weekend and will be popping back up on a regular basis in 2022:
“I have a very busy work schedule but this was an opportunity I simply couldn’t refuse. Working with Mike White, the Head of Media, Marketing and Events at HoH Food Hall, Neil Harris at Bug Vinyl and the wider team, I can’t wait to share Hull and East Yorkshire’s countless DJs and music artists with the local community.”
The official launch of HoH Food Hall runs from today until Sunday 5 December. To keep up to date with what’s on now and in the future, make sure to follow HoH Food Hall on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
