Hull-based photographer takes exhibition to London barber shop

Sophie Hunter’s Hull, But Not As You Know It celebrates an intense love of our city.

Sophie Hunter is a photographer, living and working in Hull and Yorkshire. Her love of photography was inspired by her father. His safari photographs, which she would ponder over as a child, influenced her deep passion for the medium and a strong desire to learn more about the photographic art.

Her work is never quite what it first appears to be. Her photographs depict multifaceted representations of the city of Hull, its diversity, graffiti and the crumbling bits. Her intense love of the city is revealed through visions, stories, themes, dreams and memories which captivate the viewer. For her, rooftops and coffee cups offer as much thrill as a sunset. The images in this exhibition were captured during 2020/2021.

“In the first instance the photograph is for my pleasure, after that, if others get pleasure from it, I am happy,” she says.

Sophie insists that, although not always technically perfect, she feels that something magical happens within her as she takes photographs – a deep connection with her father, who she says would “probably have a fit of apoplexy if he could see some of the photos I love and take.”

Her work is intensely personal. It conveys, either subconsciously or consciously, her passion and love of Hull and surrounding areas, whilst creating timeless images. She is very proud of this opportunity to introduce this small piece of Hull to London.

All images from the exhibition will be available to purchase directly from The Barbery. The prints are originals with an accompanying certificate of authenticity, printed on fine art paper, bespoke framed in solid oak.
