Hull Dance Company Tamar & Jo return with a brand new set of dances to delight audiences on their doorsteps, this time completely free of charge.
Between 11th August and 5th September Hull residents can book Tamar & Jo to perform 5-minute dances on their doorsteps, with a menu of three brand new pieces to choose from. The project was designed to lift spirits during the pandemic, and now, thanks to funding from Hull City Council and Arts Council England, will continue to put smiles on faces across the city as normality returns.
In summer 2020, Tamar & Jo reached over 400 people live and 5000 online with their varied menu of dances, and during the Christmas period delivered 70 dances in three weeks in their traffic stopping, light-up dresses. The warm and joyous response from audiences prompted them to plan a bigger, better version for 2021.
With no price tag for Hull bookings Tamar & Jo are looking to reach every area of the city.
‘It is hugely important to us that there are no barriers to people enjoying the dances whoever they are, whatever their background.’ says Jo who grew up on Orchard Park Estate before studying dance at Liverpool John Moores University.
Tamar & Jo announced the news that they would be bringing Doorstep Dances back after achieving a successful funding bid through Arts Council England and Hull City Council. The funding has not only enabled them to offer the dances free of charge, but also to work with some exciting collaborators including leading choreographer Lea Anderson MBE
“Lea Anderson has been a huge inspiration to us. She has been the most exciting, innovative choreographer in the UK for almost 40 years and working with her has helped us to raise our game, as well as bringing something very special to the menu”
When booking, audiences can choose from three dances, all around 5-minutes long, and each with its own distinctive theme, performance style, costume and music. Sync or Swim is a funny dance-theatre piece that follows two synchronised swimmers as they enjoy a day out at the seaside.
Everybody In Place takes the audience back to the 90s with a loud rave-inspired performance with a stylish twist. The third piece on the menu is weird and wonderful Lea Anderson duet ‘Always’, featuring song as well as dance. Each piece is completely different and offers audiences a unique dance experience.
Whichever dance you choose from the 2021 Doorstep Dances menu, you are guaranteed to have an unforgettable experience, as Tamar & Jo put on a very special show just for you.
Bookings are free of charge for Hull residents via Eventbrite.
