Hull Independent Cinema announces new season of fantastic films

Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s multi-award winning film PARALLEL MOTHERS, starring Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit, opens Hull Independent Cinema’s new season of film on Tuesday 5 April at Vue Cinema Hull Princes Quay.

It is the first of fifteen titles that include the best of independent and world cinema, a festival of music documentaries and a silent film with live piano accompaniment. Screenings take place at Vue Cinema, Hull Truck Theatre and Humber Street Social, organised by Hull Independent Cinema, a local charity which exists to bring the best of independent, foreign language and speciality film to local audiences.

Highlights of the new season include Joanna Hogg’s sumptuous sequel THE SOUVENIR PART II starring Honor Swinton Byrne and Tilda Swinton; the final film of Joachim Trier’s Oslo Trilogy THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD; the bewilderingly self-referential THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT starring Nicolas Cage as a fictionalised version of himself; and the powerful and innovative animated refugee documentary FLEE.

Special events in the programme include an in-person live Q&A featuring the director of new British documentary HOSTILE, examining the impact of the British Government’s “hostile environment” immigration policy; and a festival of music documentaries with three films in three venues over three days, organised in partnership with DOC’N ROLL FILM FESTIVAL. HIC’s regular partners Yorkshire Silents also return with a screening of 1928 classic BEGGARS OF LIFE. starring Louise Brooks, accompanied by a live improvised piano score.

James Russell, Chair of Trustees at Hull Independent Cinema, said, “Our first full season of the year has been a great success and we’re really looking forward to keeping up the momentum with this new programme. There are lots of great new films around now and narrowing them all down to the final programme was a difficult job! We’re delighted to offer Hull audiences a programme of fantastic films and great special events they can’t see anywhere else in the city.”

This year Hull Independent Cinema is introducing a new benefit for HIC members, who will be able to buy tickets for one specially selected film for just £1. This season’s choice is Kosovan drama HIVE, winner of three awards at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Full details of the film programme, how to buy tickets, and how to become an HIC member are available on the HIC website (hullindependentcinema.com), and printed copies of the film programme are also available at all screenings and from bars, cafés, shops and other locations around the city.
