The programme of independent and foreign movies runs throughout November and December at Vue Cinema Hull Princes Quay and Hull Truck Theatre, giving film fans the chance to see great new films that can’t be seen anywhere else in the city.

The programme opens on Tuesday 2 November at Vue with the “bonkers and totally brilliant” (London Standard) ANNETTE. French filmmaker Leos Carax’s new film stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard in an exhilarating collision of cinema, stage show, live concert and celebrity culture. “The most original film of 2021” (Mark Kermode, The Observer)  for HIC’s first screening in over 20 months.

Foreign-language gems include off-kilter Norwegian comedy NINJABAY, combining live action with scratchy animation in a refreshingly frank look at pregnancy; and NEVER GONNA SNOW AGAIN, a mysterious tale of a Ukranian immigrant with strange healing powers working in a wealthy Polish gated community.

English-language highlights include the critically adored festival hit LIMBO, a wry comedy about the experience of Syrian asylum seekers on a remote Scottish island; the story of reunited sisters living on the Irish border in WILDFIRE, winner of two Irish Academy Awards, and Nicholas Cage turning in one of his very best performances as an off-grid outsider forced to confront his former life in PIG. We also have documentary covered with the quietly humorous and melancholy MEN WHO SING, the portrait of a Welsh male voice choir dealing with an ageing membership and a recruitment crisis.

Our regular friends Yorkshire Silent Film Festival also return to Hull as part of this new season. Douglas Fairbanks in ROBIN HOOD is the swashbuckling 1922 silent version of the famous story, one of the most influential adventure films ever and often held to be the best screen Robin Hood of them all. Pianist Jonny Best will bring the film to life with his brilliant improvised live score.

Ellie Irwin, one of the Trustees at Hull Independent Cinema, said, “After such a long time away it’s great to be back, bringing brilliant films to our brilliant Hull audience. With drama, documentary, music, adventure, comedy, mystery and much more, there’s bound to be something for everyone.”

Tickets are on sale now. Full programme and ticket details can be found on the Hull Independent Cinema website (hullindependentcinema.com). Printed copies of the new season brochure can be found in bars, shops, cafes and other venues around Hull.
