Hull tech start-up’s app attracts investment from social media stars

Hull-born tech entrepreneur Matt McKay is putting the city on the global tech map with his innovative app GOALD, which has secured significant investment and attracted high-profile social media influencers as co-owners.

GOALD, a platform that combines challenges with charitable fundraising, has seen remarkable success since its soft launch. The app has been downloaded over 100,000 times across more than 150 countries, showcasing its global appeal and the strength of Hull’s growing tech sector.

In a major coup for the local startup, U.S. TikTok sensations Michael Shields and Trent Golz have not only invested in GOALD but have also become co-owners. Known as “That’llwork,” these social media stars boast over 10 million followers, bringing significant visibility to the Hull-based app.

McKay, who conceived the idea for GOALD while working for a tech company in Melbourne, Australia has assembled an impressive team of industry experts to bring his vision to life. The app allows users to create and participate in challenges, compete on live leaderboards, and raise funds for charities.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I envisage I would be able to create such an incredible team of such talented but more importantly good people,” McKay said, reflecting on GOALD’s success.

Since its soft launch, GOALD has seen remarkable success, with over 100,000 downloads across more than 150 countries. Its innovative concept has attracted pro athletes from both Hull KR and Hull FC, cricket legend Michael Vaughan, entertainer – Britain’s Got Talent star Calum Scott, as well as a host of social media stars from around the world.

GOALD’s success story is a testament to Hull’s growing reputation as a hub for tech innovation and entrepreneurship. It demonstrates that with the right idea and execution, local entrepreneurs can attract global attention and investment, putting Hull firmly on the map in the competitive world of tech startups.

McKay partnered with his childhood friend Liam Cooper, former Leeds United captain and Scotland International, to bring this vision to life. The app’s growth strategy includes enhancing existing iOS and Android apps while introducing new features to elevate user engagement.
