Hull theatre company to open a loose parts play space in Hull city centre

Hull-based theatre company The Herd are opening a pop-up play space in Princes Quay Shopping Centre. The Herd Shop will be an exciting new play centre for children aged 0-5 and their families.

The Herd are a local company who exist to make innovative art for families in Hull and beyond. Last year they were commissioned by the Southbank Centre, London, to make a three-month Play Installation called REPLAY in the midst of London’s most vibrant cultural quarter on the South Bank of the Thames.

Artist Sam Caseley said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing more of our play work to Hull, to allow space for creativity, imagination and childhood.”

This self-led space will allow young children to play freely with their adults, with open-ended materials that don’t have a fixed purpose, to allow for creative freedom and limitless play opportunities.

Artist Ruby Thompson added: “You can pop into the shop for a quick visit that lasts a matter of minutes or come and play all day.”

Alongside play at The Herd shop, the company will create more playful experiences this summer with an outdoor show at Freedom Festival, play experiences in various places across the city, and a crowd-sourced play map of Hull in development.

The shop has been designed by Theatre Designer Rūta Irbīte with an exciting window display by local illustrator and graphic designer Rebecca Drury.
