Enthused reader, Tilly, of East Hull’s Liberty Academy, was shocked to find that she had won a national reading award after submitting a routine assignment.

Earlier this term, Tilly was nearing the end of her Reading Plus homework, an online literacy programme used by the academy, unaware that the final assignment that she was due to submit would help her achieve a national award.
Tilly, who had already won the academy’s Reading Plus award for exceptional dedication to reading, received notification from the organisation of her national award shortly after submitting her fourth and final assignment.
Alongside all of her reading at Liberty Academy, Tilly then committed to hours of additional learning, completing assignments about her favourite authors and books, as well as producing vlogs and writing pieces of poetry.
Tilly, the national award winner, said, “I learned I received the award after completing the final task. It was already an honour to have been involved in the experience but becoming the overall champion is a mighty title I am very proud of.”
Tilly thanked her English teacher, Mr Williams, for his support throughout the year.
This is the first time that a student from the academy has ever won the Reading Plus national award.
Reading Plus is an adaptive, research-based online literacy programme designed to accelerate reading growth. It targets fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and stamina for pupils in Key Stage 2 and above.
