Much-loved Yorkshire sourdough maker, Luke’s Bakery, is celebrating its second business anniversary this week after a milestone year.
Based in Brough, East Yorkshire, Luke’s Bakery was founded in December 2022 by Luke Jenneson when he switched careers from banking to baking, utilising his training from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in London.
After perfecting his products and establishing a local customer base in year one, Luke’s second year has seen the business go from strength to strength, recruiting nine new team members, baking thousands of sourdough loaves a week, and more than doubling its customer base of shops and hospitality businesses across Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
As well as bagging three Great Taste Awards back in July, Luke was proud to receive the award for Best Bakery Product at the 2024 Deliciously Yorkshire Awards in October. The judges selected his Malted Granary Sourdough as winner, calling it ‘simply delicious’.
It was also an exciting year personally for Luke and his wife and teammate Vicki Jenneson, who welcomed their son, Henry, over the summer.
As the business embarks on its third year, Luke has announced new packaging for his range of ‘Yorkshire born, Yorkshire bread’ sourdoughs, a project that has been a labour of love for the last six months. The new labels will be revealed and rolled out in January 2025.
Luke Jenneson, Founder of Luke’s Bakery, said: “I couldn’t have reached this milestone without the incredible support of my brilliant team and our hugely valued local suppliers and customers. From our first loaf to today, it’s been a joy to share our love of baking with a growing community of sourdough enthusiasts.
“Thank you for being along for the ride, your support makes our 2am bakery alarm clocks more than worth it. I can’t wait to share our new-look packaging with you in the new year.”
Vanessa Barker of Vanessa’s Delicatessen & Cafe in Beverley, one of Luke’s customers, said of the milestone: “Happy second birthday to Luke’s Bakery. Or in our opinion the best bakery in Yorkshire! We are so lucky to be supplied by Luke – quality is at the forefront of everything we do and using Luke’s bread means our sandwiches and paninis are the best they have ever been.”
Annika Wardale-Göthe, founder of award-winning East Yorkshire caterers, Annika’s Apron, said: “I discovered Luke’s bread after buying a loaf from a local greengrocer – it was the most incredible sourdough I’d ever tasted! I got in touch with him straight away and we’ve been serving it at weddings ever since.
“We always like to buy from local businesses, from people who are honest, passionate and committed to quality. We’re incredibly proud to buy from Luke’s Bakery and would like to wish the whole team a very happy second birthday.”
