Major improvements to East Yorkshire bus services in Hull

East Yorkshire Buses is excited to announce a series of significant updates to its bus services, set to take effect from 10 November 2024.

In response to customer feedback, these changes are designed to simplify routes, improve reliability and provide more frequent services to passengers across Hull and surrounding areas.

The updates also include additional early-evening services and increased frequencies, making public transport more accessible and more convenient than ever before.

Key improvements include:

  • Simplified Route Numbers: We’ve made it easier to navigate our services by aligning bus numbers along key corridors. Whether you’re travelling on Anlaby Road or Beverley Road, you’ll find routes numbered for clarity and ease-of-use.
  • Increased Service Frequencies: Many services will now run more frequently, particularly during the early evening, providing more options for passengers travelling later in the day.

Detailed changes to services

Anlaby Road Services (51-59)

  • Service 51: This service now connects Hull Interchange and Wymersley Road, replacing the 56 on this section. With more buses during the day and an increased frequency between 6pm and 8pm, passengers can enjoy more convenient and flexible travel options.
  • Service 56: This service will continue to operate from ASDA Bilton to Hull, but now extends to Castle Hill Hospital, replacing service 63 on this section. This means up to three buses per hour between Bilton, Holderness Road and Castle Hill Hospital with no need to change buses. The early evening service frequency has also been increased, running until 8pm, for more convenient evening travel.
  • Services 52, 53, 54, 57 and 58: These routes have been renumbered from 152, 153, 154, 66 and 66B for simplicity and consistency. The 54, 57 and 58 also benefit from an increased early-evening frequency, up to 8pm, making these services more reliable for late journeys.
  • Service 350: Please note that East Yorkshire Buses will no longer operate journeys on this route, but Stagecoach will replace these journeys.

Beverley Road Services (41-X47)

  • Service 41: This service has been renumbered from 121 and now offers a more reliable timetable. Journeys into Hull will travel directly to Hull Interchange, via Prospect Street, bypassing Carr Lane for quicker connections.
  • Service 43: Renumbered from 23, this service includes minor timetable changes to improve reliability, ensuring passengers have a more dependable service.
  • Services 44 & 45: Service 45 has been renumbered from 105 and, along with the new Service 44, provides a combined frequency of buses every 10 minutes between the University and Hull Interchange, on weekdays, and every 15 minutes on Saturdays. The evening services on these routes are coordinated to offer a 30-minute combined service, making travel in the evenings more frequent and flexible.
  • Services X46 & X47: Both services benefit from minor timetable improvements for reliability and evening services in York have been revised.

Spring Bank Services

  • Service 35: Renumbered from 54, this service will operate with an increased evening frequency between 6pm and 8pm, ensuring passengers along this route have more travel options later in the day.
  • Service 104: This route benefits from timetable improvements and an increased early-evening frequency until 8pm, giving passengers more flexibility for evening travel.

Holderness Road Services

  • Service 24: We’ve listened to passenger feedback about the need for more buses on this route. As a result, service 24 will now run more frequently, with buses operating every hour, from Monday to Saturday, during the day. This increase in frequency will provide smoother, less crowded journeys and greater convenience for passengers along Holderness Road.
  • Service 25: Service 25 will now operate between Beverley and Hornsea, with additional early-evening trips, making it easier for passengers to travel later into the evening. The section between Hessle and Beverley will now be covered by the new 26 Service.
  • Service 26: The new Service 26 replaces the previous Hessle-to-Beverley section of service 25, providing a more punctual and reliable service for passengers. This change ensures that service 26 offers better connections and meets the travel needs of passengers between Hessle and Beverley.

Stuart Fillingham, Commercial Director at East Yorkshire Buses, said: “We’re excited to roll out these improvements, which directly address the feedback from our passengers. With increased service frequencies, especially in the early evening, and new connections like the 56 to Castle Hill Hospital and the brand-new 44, we’re making travel more convenient and reliable.

“We’re grateful for the support from Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council and the UK Government, which provides a springboard to make these services sustainable in the long-term. These changes will make a real difference and encourage more people to choose bus travel.”

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Roads and Highways at Hull City Council, said: “Working in partnership with East Yorkshire, and the city’s other bus operators, through the Hull Bus Alliance, the council is constantly striving to deliver the type of bus services that our residents, and visitors to the city, need and expect.

“Enhancing bus services to make them more punctual, more reliable and more frequent helps make taking the bus a more attractive option for customers, which in turn makes it easier to make more sustainable travel choices.”

Financial support

The early evening increases on services 44, 45, 51, 54, 56, 57, 58 and 104, and the increase to three buses-an-hour on service 51 during the day, as well as service 44, are made possible with financial support from Hull City Council, through the bus service improvement plan (BSIP), funded by the UK Government. Additionally, the increased frequency on service 24 is supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, also funded by the UK Government.

Timetables are now available online and printed versions are started to be delivered to Hull Travel Centre and other key locations.
