Middle Child announce new ‘road rage’ play, coming to Fruit Market car park in May

Biting Point tells the story of two people who spend their working days stuck in traffic, until an accident on the Humber Bridge roundabout turns their lives upside down.

The play will be staged on top of the Fruit Market multi-storey car park, with audiences wearing headphones to experience dialogue, music and sound design.

Written by Sid Sagar, Biting Point is the latest show from Middle Child, who last year staged Baby, He Loves You in a wedding marquee on Stage@TheDock.

Middle Child artistic director, Paul Smith, said: “Biting Point is a story that asks us how we can be good in a world that makes us so angry.

“It’s about finding our place in society, and how the constant pressure we’re all under can turn us into people we don’t want to be.

“The world feels like a divided place right now. Biting Point aims to bring people together to reflect on how we can better channel our frustrations, acting as a warning for what can happen if we don’t.”

Biting Point was commissioned in 2023 and its themes of class, racism and anger are all the more pertinent following the riots of last summer.

Paul added: “Sid’s beautiful writing approaches such a timely topic with real care, while the car park setting, original soundtrack and detailed sound design combine to create a live event which will challenge people’s perceptions of theatre.”

Biting Point is designed by Bethany Wells, who also designed Baby, He Loves You,and features music by Hull composer, Kobby Taylor.

Biting Point is the first full-length stage play for writer Sid Sagar, an actor whose recent roles include Cabaret in the West End and The Crucible at Sheffield Theatres.

Sid said: “I’m so excited to be working on this play with the bold and brilliant Middle Child, premiering in the city that inspired it.

Biting Point is driven by a desire to find goodness in a difficult and uncertain world, and I hope it will resonate with audiences in Hull and beyond.”

Paul Smith added: “In the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, car parks are spaces primarily associated with frustration and stress.

Biting Point brings to life these concrete mazes with a stunning piece of new writing that will change how we view the people around us.

“The show will be made even more special with a pre-show experience, curated by Rachael Abbey, featuring original writing from Jay Mitra and Grace Waga Glevey.”

Performances start on Saturday 10 May and run through until Sunday 18 May.

It then goes on tour, including shows at the Flemingate car park in Beverley from Thursday 12-Sunday 15 June.

Tickets for the Hull shows go on-sale through the Middle Child website on Tuesday 18 March.

They are available from £15, with a suggested price of £20 and limited £10 tickets for unwaged people.

Biting Point tours to Pocklington (6-7 June), Selby (8 June), Beverley (12-15 June) and Redcar (21-22 June), with more dates to be announced.
