Mozart and Beethoven have been voted the top choice composers that Hull residents are interested in exploring or learning more about over the next 12 months, according to new research.\
A new study by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) explored the public’s music preferences for the next 12-months – and 56% of Hull residents expressed an interest in exploring or learning more about classical music.
Further, 23% of people in Hull said they would be adding classical tracks to their streaming playlists, whist some preferred to buy classical music recordings on CDs (21%) and vinyl (13%). A further 21% of Hull residents expressed interested in experiencing traditional classical repertoire performed in a concert hall.
The top 10 classical composers Hull residents will be exploring or learning more about over the autumn and winter months comprise of:

3. Beethoven – 17%
4. Tchaikovsky – 10%
5. JS Bach – 11%
6. Chopin – 13%
7. Verdi – 12%
8. Handel – 9%
9. Wagner – 8%
10. Stravinsky – 8%
Sarah Bardwell, Managing Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, comments: “Our recent research shows that 56% of people in Hull want to discover more orchestral music – which is brilliant news to receive as we prepare to celebrate 80 years of the RPO. Since our residency began in 2014, we’ve built a real connection with audiences and communities in the city, and this season continues that with a great range of orchestral concerts for all ages.”
The findings come at a time when the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra counts down to the launch of its milestone 80th anniversary concert season on 23rd September. The new season will celebrate 80-years of music-making, presenting diverse programming and new concert formats that recognise and celebrate the changing face of today’s concert audience.
The RPO season will comprise of 57 concerts spanning 12 UK venues, plus international festivals and tours. In addition to four new music premieres and eight performances celebrating the Beethoven Bicentenary, the music will celebrate video games, Motown, soul, Broadway, tango and film music.
