No-Dig Community Allotment Family Day

The No-Dig Community Allotment on Clough Road is inviting local residents to its Family Day on Saturday 28 August from 10am to 2pm.

In partnership with Unity in Community, the No-Dig Allotment team will be demonstrating the sowing and harvest process of no-dig and visitors will be invited to get stuck in.

The group aims to create and maintain a thriving community space to learn about growing food organically, following the Charles Dowding No-Dig method.

A variety of activities are planned to highlight the benefits of a no-dig allotment. These include; sowing seeds and harvesting salad, fruits and vegetables (subject to availability).

There will also be cake tasting (made with vegetables), recipes ideas to take home, advice from the gardeners, a wildlife station, cress head making, a bubble station and family picnic area.

Lorna Walker and her daughter Danielle manage the No-Dig Community Allotment. She explains:

“We are excited to invite local people to this wonderful place and to learn more about growing your own in this way. We are also looking for regular volunteers to help us manage the work in return for produce on the day they are here.

“There are so many benefits; getting outside in the fresh air and in all weathers, its great exercise and all of our volunteers will confirm that it is the best therapy. So much so that Unity in Community will also be offering work here as part of their social prescribing network.

“Unity in Community is supporting this event, to help raise awareness and help people who have been isolated either before the pandemic or those who have become increasingly isolated during the last eighteen months.

“We are a friendly bunch, we have a lot of fun and look forward to meeting like-minded people who want to get in amongst the fruit, veg and wildlife.”

Dennis Woods is General Manager at Unity in Community. He adds:

“Lorna, Danielle and their team of volunteers will be putting on a fantastic event on 28 August. We would like to invite local residents who are interested in growing their own fruit and vegetables, as well as meeting new people, to come down and meet us.

“Refreshments and snacks will be available, but please do bring your own picnic. Fingers crossed for good weather and you will see what a wonderful haven the No-Dig Community Allotment is set in.

“Please note, there is no vehicular access to the allotment, pedestrian access only.”
