Young people interested in careers in healthcare have been given a valuable insight into the world of nursing, thanks to a successful two-day Summer School.
The event welcomed Year 10 and Year 12 students who took part in a range of practical activities designed to showcase the skills, opportunities and rewards of a career in nursing. Students gained hands-on experience in bandaging, wound care, emergency assessments and clinical simulation using manikins, helping to bring healthcare careers to life.
The Summer School was designed to provide a realistic and engaging introduction to the NHS, and the many roles available within nursing. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with students describing the experience as welcoming, informative and inspiring. Many said the programme had given them a clearer understanding of nursing and the different career pathways available within healthcare.
Claire Pick, Simulation Operations Coordinator, said: “It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic young people taking part in the Nursing Summer School. The students embraced every activity and showed a real curiosity about healthcare careers. Giving young people the opportunity to experience practical aspects of nursing helps them understand the skills, compassion and teamwork involved in caring for patients.”
All students who completed feedback said the event had increased their interest in pursuing a career in nursing or healthcare. One participant described the experience as having “really inspired me to keep learning and pushing for my dream job.” Others said they enjoyed gaining a real-world view of nursing, learning practical skills and finding out more about the different opportunities available within the NHS.
Claire added: “The feedback shows just how valuable these experiences can be. We hope the Summer School has helped students feel more confident about their future choices and inspired many of them to consider a rewarding career in healthcare.”
Students also expressed a desire for even more practical activities and longer sessions in future programmes, highlighting how engaged they were throughout the event. Organisers thanked everyone involved in delivering the Summer School and helping to inspire the next generation of nurses and healthcare professionals.
