Wire Fence provided a charity discount of £183 on gabion cages to Environmental & Management Solutions (EMS), supporting the Orchard Park Postcode Gardener project, which aims to enhance biodiversity and engage the local community in Hull. The gabion structures, assembled by volunteers from Caddick Construction, serve as planters and low walls, providing ideal habitats for wildlife.
Founded in 2009 and based in East Hull, EMS Ltd works to alleviate food and fuel poverty across Hull, East Yorkshire, North, and North East Lincolnshire. The charity offers a range of services, including affordable food access, community gardens, energy-saving initiatives, and educational programmes that emphasise environmental stewardship and biodiversity.
The Orchard Park Postcode Gardener project, managed by EMS, focuses on creating green spaces within the Hull community to boost local biodiversity and encourage residents to take an active role in environmental conservation. The gabion cages provided by Wire Fence add a practical and aesthetic element to the project, serving as planters that attract various local species. As a festive touch, the gabions were decorated with Halloween-themed cobwebs and bats, creating a unique, community-centred addition to the project.
“Wildlife gabions are ideal habitat for creatures such as spiders, thanks to all the nooks and crannies they create. They’re also ideal low walls for our bike shelter. Thanks to Wire Fence for a great deal,” said John Pickles, Project Manager at EMS Ltd.
“It’s inspiring to see our gabions in action, especially with a seasonal twist that brings attention to biodiversity,” said Dora Pista of Wire Fence. “We’re delighted to support EMS Ltd’s work in Hull and proud to be part of a project that combines creativity, community, and conservation.”
