Hoi, a contemporary bar located on Princes Avenue, is proud to present From Ukraine to UK, a new exhibition showcasing the captivating 35mm film photography of Ukrainian artist Danylo Nazarenko. Curated by local photographer and curator Victoria Smith, this exhibition is part of an exciting new series of exhibitions at Hoi, offering a fresh platform for local artists.

Danylo Nazarenko’s passion for photography began in Ukraine, where his sister introduced him to the craft and gave him his first Zenit 11 film camera. His journey in photography took a new turn when he met Victoria Smith at Hoi. Victoria, a fellow photographer and curator, recognised Danylo’s talent and encouraged him to start capturing his new surroundings in Hull. “He mentioned he didn’t have a camera with him in Hull, so I went home, grabbed one of mine, and gave it to him. I knew he would create something special,” shares Victoria.
Victoria recalls, “I scanned his first roll of film from that camera, and it was incredible to see his hidden talent reveal itself. That moment marked the beginning of Danylo’s photography practice in Hull and ultimately led to the creation of this exhibition.”
From Ukraine to UK features a series of 35mm photographs that blend scenes from both Ukraine and Hull, creating a visual dialogue between two places and cultures. Through these images, Nazarenko offers an intimate look at his personal journey, capturing everyday moments, landscapes, and the essence of both locations. Working with film photography, which demands careful consideration with each shot, Nazarenko embraces the mystery and excitement of the medium — never knowing exactly how a photograph will turn out until the film is developed.
In addition to showcasing his work, Danylo has chosen to donate the proceeds from the exhibition to Unicef, a charity that supported him and his family during a difficult time. “The charity helped me and my family when we needed it and I appreciate it. I want to give back to someone who needs it like me not that long ago,” says Nazarenko. This act of generosity reflects Danylo’s commitment to supporting others and paying forward the help he received.
The exhibition opened its doors on 23rd February, with a packed crowd at Hoi. Danylo mingled with visitors, friends and family, sharing the stories behind his photographs. During the opening night, 7 out of 17 framed prints were sold, along with several small prints. “We raised over £300 for Unicef on the opening night,” says Victoria. “It would be a great achievement for all the work to sell by the end of the exhibition. The charity is very important to Danylo, and his work truly deserves to be cherished.”
A special thanks is extended to Steven Skoyles, the owner of Hoi, for his support in encouraging this exhibition and providing a platform for Danylo’s work. Hoi’s commitment to supporting local artists has been instrumental in bringing this exhibition to life and creating a meaningful space for cultural exchange.
